During the summer of 1999, Jeanie and I took a trip to
Kauai,
where we celebrated her grandmother's 80th birthday.
Kauai is the most western
publically accessable Hawaiian island. The Hawaiian island
of Nihau is further west, but is not publically accessible.
Kauai is the "Garden Island", emphasizing its beautiful
mountains, rivers, waterfalls, coastlines and beeches. If
you are going to one of the Hawaiian islands and want a
spectacular night-life, Kauai probably shouldn't be your
first choice. However if you love the outdoors through
hiking, paddling, swimming and snorkling, or sight-seeing,
Kauai may be the perfect place for you. Of course the weather
is unbelievably pleasant, making it a great place to relax
and forget about work.
Most of Kauai is inaccessible by automobile. Large sections
of the island are accessible only by helicopter. It was on a
helicopter tour that we took the scenic pictures below. We
flew with
Inter-Island
Helicopters, since they let you fly with the doors off!
That made it easier to take pictures, as well as adding some
thrills. A one-hour helicopter tour of Kauai is well-worth
the approximately $150 US you'll pay per person. I took
sixty-two photos in about sixty minutes, and I can't believe
how splendidly they came out.
